Disposable Clothing Standards

When disposable clothing is required to perform or protect against specific situations or environments, they can be tested to a set of globally recognised standards. NOTE: Whilst the information provided in this summary of disposable clothing standards can be used in the process of selecting the correct item for a particular application, it is the responsibility of the end user to ensure the garment is suitable for its intended use.

BS EN943-1:2002 – (Type 1) Gas tight. This clothing is intrinsically sealed against the environment.

BS EN943-1:2002 – (Type 2) Non-gas tight. This clothing retains a positive internal pressure to prevent dust, liquid or vapour penetration.

BS EN14605:2005 – (Type 3) Liquid tight . This clothing can protect against strong and directional jets of a liquid chemical, such as spray from a burst pipe under pressure. A requirement is a barrier fabric (chemical tests to EN369 permeation test) and sealed seams.

BS EN14605:2005 – (Type 4) Spray tight. This clothing can protect against saturation of liquid chemical, where volume of the liquid builds up on the garment forming pools that result in rivulets. A requirement is a barrier fabric (chemical tests to EN369 permeation test) and sealed seams.

BS EN13982-1:2004 – (Type 5) Dry particle. This clothing is for protection against hazardous dusts and any dry particles.

BS EN13034:2005 – (Type 6) Reduced spray. This clothing is for protection against light spray and splashes of liquid chemicals, where there is no directional spray or build-up of liquid on the garment, but there may be a fine mist of droplets in the atmosphere.

BS EN1149-1 – Anti-static. This clothing has a maximum surface resistivity of 5x1010 Ω (Ohms).

BS EN1073:2002 – Radioactive contamination. This clothing is for protection against ionising radiation particles.

BS EN14126 – Anti-viral. This clothing is for protection against viral bacteria, blood borne pathogens, bodily fluids and other infective agents.
